The 21 st CCLC Program is a key component of President Bush's No Child Left Behind Act. Re-authorized under Title IV, Part B, it provides an opportunity for students and their families to continue to learn new skills and discover new abilities after the school day has ended.
The focus of this program is to provide expanded academic enrichment opportunities for the children attending low performing schools. Tutorial services and academic enrichment opportunities are designed to help students meet local and state academic standards in subjects such as reading and math. In addition 21 st CCLC programs provide youth development activities, drug and violence prevention programs, technology education programs, art, music and recreation programs, counseling and character education to enhance the academic component of the program.
The purpose of the Flint School's 21 st Century Community Learning Centers Initiative is to support and fortify students' learning through coordinated and integrated extended learning opportunities. The Flint Project targets five elementary schools located within the Flint Community School District whose students have demonstrated a need for academic support services. These five selected schools will be transformed into community learning centers.
Program services and supports include: Title I SES, SPARK physical education programming, an array of youth development and risk reduction programming, a daily snack and dinner, opportunities for participation in cultural and fine arts activities and family literacy activities. These program components will be integrated into the existing model for before and after school programs in the Flint Community School District. |
