September 9, 2005
Dear Parent/ Guardian,
The Flint Community School District recognizes that competing in athletics is not a right but a privilege.
In partnership with the Flint Area Sports Council, the districts' Athletic Study Table program will begin the week of September 26, 2005 . The purpose of the Athletic Study Table is to support and enhance students' educational experiences by providing them with academic study strategies that promote independent, collaborative learning. Like other students, athletes are expected to attend class, participate in class discussion, meet with teachers, complete assignments and be prompt and prepared for tutorial sessions.
The goal of the Athletic Study Table is to provide comprehensive and effective tutorial services for Flint student-athletes and help them improve their potential for academic success, graduation and preparation for life-long learning.
The Athletic Study Table is mandatory for athletes with less than a 2.5 Grade Point Average (GPA). Participation is mandatory for all freshmen student-athletes regardless of their grade point average. Student-athletes with less than a 2.5 accumulative GPA and freshmen student-athletes must attend throughout the entire sport season that he/she participates in. This intervention program will allow student-athletes an opportunity to succeed in the classroom and in the sports arena.
Marty Embry, former Flint Central athlete and DePaul University graduate is the coordinator of the program. If you have any questions, please call (810) 760-1211.
Sincerely,
Dr. Gail Ganakas, Chief of Community
