Get A Scholarship
College can be affordable for most students after obtaining scholarships, grants and other financial aid. More than a billion dollars is available for students through financial aid. Why wouldn't you try to get it? Now is the time to actually research and pursue your higher education options.
There are three basic types of financial aid that you can apply for: loans, grants and scholarships. Work study, the fourth option, is also available. Work study is a federal government program that offers part time work to help students with a variety of educational cost.
Loans, which may be subsidized by the federal government, must be paid back. Grants and scholarships, which are available from the private sector, businesses, state and federal government, do not have to be repaid.
First and foremost you should obtain and complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is provided by the government. You can also call the Federal Student Financial Aid Information Center (800-4FED-AID) to make certain that your potential college is eligible to participate in the federal student aid program prior to applying.
You can actually find money in the most unusual places if you simply take a little bit of time and do some of the research yourself. First you must look locally. Community leaders, civic groups and business organizations connected to your field of interest can certainly assist you in this area. Don't be afraid to go directly to the source when looking for money and don't be afraid to ask for different leads.
You can also contact the financial aid administrator at the college you want to attend to inquire about a plethora of scholarships and grants. The administrator will surely have a variety of sources for you to investigate. Again, you must not be afraid to ask for the money. In many cases they are not going to volunteer this information to you.
Go to the library to locate state and private sources of financial aid. Simply speak to the librarian about grants and scholarship. The librarian is a walking source of information that loves to share this wealth of knowledge. Again, if you don't ask they will not share!
You can also register online for a free scholarship search: www.wiredscholarship.com and also www.fastweb.com . Again, do your research and you will be surprised at how many different sources you will uncover. Your academic advisor, school counselor and academic coordinator will certainly assist you with this endeavor.
When you decide to apply for a scholarship make sure that certain criteria are met. Get a good grade of paper, check for spelling errors and just make sure the entire application is well prepared.
Have your counselor or academic advisor double check the document for you. Ask your English teacher to check your application as well. They will be excited that you are asking them for help!
Everything from the content of your resume to the type of paper should be superior in quality. Remember that you are going to be judged on the overall appearance of your application and the scholarship board will be looking at many others. Also, make certain that you are applying for only the scholarships that you are eligible for.
Don't slack off of getting the good grades. In a nut shell, if you don't have good grades, you will not be getting federal aid. Federal law states that to be eligible to receive federal student aid, you must meet and maintain your school's standards of academic progress toward a degree offered by that institution.
ALL OF YOU BEWARE OF SCAMS!!! There are many shady agencies that are only out to scam you. They will promise you the world knowing that you may not qualify for any type of financial aid. If an agency guarantee's that you will receive money after you pay a fee, run away. Quite often you will find yourself paying for a service only to get nothing but high hopes in the end.
If you think you have been a victim of a scholarship scam, contact the National Fraud Information Center at 1-800-876-7060. Researching and applying for scholarships is a full time job, something that only you can do for yourself. With a little luck and a lot of perseverance, you can finance your higher education and achieve your ultimate goals of obtaining a degree.
The following list is general and specific scholarships that are available to you. This is a jump start to your scholarship hunt. Make note of the deadlines and please do not put it off. When you complete reading this document, begin doing your research, obtain the application, have it proofed and ship it out immediately. Hey, just in case you don't get an athletic scholarship, at least have another game plan.
Here is another interesting point while scholarship hunting is to always research each site in detail. You may find an additional source of funding without looking for it. Pay close attention what you are going to be researching!
