Program Description

Classical Academy will provide a stellar educational experience that will shape new generations of local, national, and world leaders.  Classical Academy’s comprehensive college preparatory curricula is shaped by the Michigan Department of Education’s expectations for Rigor, Relevance, and Relationship in all secondary programs.  Students are expected to demonstrate higher level thinking and grow to become life long learners with purpose and a dedication to community service.

Criteria for Eligibility to Classical Academy

Classical Academy is part of the Flint Community Schools educational system, and is a college preparatory public school for students who:

  • Will benefit from a demanding academic program
  • Will be committed to completing required hours in community service
  • Will be responsive to school values and expectations

Flint Community Schools admits qualified applicants without regard to gender, race, color, creed, religion, ethnic origin, or finances.  The admissions process begins in the spring of the year before students enroll in the Academy.  During the admissions process, we learn about applicants from completed written applications, letters of recommendation, school records, and testing.

Rigor - The Academic Program

  • Classical Academy welcomes students from all ethnic and social-economic backgrounds.  We seek to enroll students that are able to handle a highly rigorous academic curricula that is balanced with innovative arts and service learning programs.
  • In our initial year 2006-2007, students entering grades 7-9 are encouraged to apply.  The school will add a grade each subsequent academic year eventually growing to grade 12.
  • On or before school year 2008-2009, Classical Academywill seek approval to implement the International Baccalaureate diploma program for high school students

Relevance - The Learning Experience

  • Classical Academy is a college preparatory high school with highly motivated teachers and students.
  • The students are self-motivated, mature, excited about learning, creative, and believe in the importance of demonstrating personal leadership through community service.
  • Classical Academy’s unique location in Flint’s Cultural Center allows students special opportunities to experience and gain from the richness of the fine arts through music, theater, and visual arts.


Relationship - The Staff

  • The staff members are committed to ensuring that all students are encouraged to reach their full learning potential. 
  • Classical Academy educators would be considered among their peers to be extremely talented, creative, and scholarly. 
  • The Classical Academy teacher understands the unique balance of pushing students toward academic success as well as nurturing them to be positive contributors to an ever changing society.
  • The District’s expectation is that all teachers develop nurturing relationships with all students.  Each student should be viewed as an individual, and their individuality should be celebrated through innovative differentiated learning experiences.

All applications and supportive documents must be submitted to the Main Office of Classical Academy.  Please contact the school at 760-1175 for deadline date and any additional information.

Letters of Recommendation

As part of the full application packet, students should submit to the Office of Admissions the following information.

  • Each applicant must submit two letters of recommendation;
    • one written by a former teacher who can attest to the applicant’s academic ability to handle a highly demanding academic program, and
    • one written by a school administrator, teacher, community person,  minister, or any other adult who can attest to the applicant’s character, initiative, and willingness to be responsive to school values and expectations.
  • Letters of Recommendation must be submitted along with the applicant’s written application.

 

School Records

As part of the full application packet, students should submit to the Office of Special Programs the following school records.

  • Attendance records showing good attendance with no more than five days of absence during the current school year.  Exceptions are made for instances of physician documented illnesses/hospitalization, and documented family emergencies such as death, fire, or accidents.
  • Applicants applying for admissions into grades 7-8 must submit a copy of the last completed semester report card to validate classroom academic achievement and attendance.  This report card must reflect an average letter grade of “B” or better in all subjects including physical education, art, music, and practical or vocational art. 
  • Applicants already enrolled in high school must submit a transcript reflecting all semesters enrolled including the last completed semester and a report card from the most recent grading period.  The applicant must have a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.0 and no letter grades of “D” or “F” on the transcript.  The transcript should also validate attendance and grade classification. 
  • Exceptions – Flint Community Schools reserves the right to make exceptions in instances of creating a well balanced student body in terms of gender, ethnic makeup, and youth leadership experiences.  When the District elects to assert its right for exceptions, every effort will be made to maintain the integrity of the Academy’s intent to selecting students who show the highest potential for handling rigorous academic and service learning programs.

 

Testing

As part of the full application packet, students should complete a Release of Information Form and submit it to their current school or District Office requesting the following testing records.

  • Each applicant currently enrolled in a public educational system supported by the Michigan Department of Education must submit as part of their full application packet information on their latest scores from the Michigan Education Assessment Program (MEAP).  Applicants must score within proficiency levels 1 and 2 on all MEAP assessment components.
  • All applicants should submit any other school or District level required assessment that validates the student’s academic proficiency.  Applicants must score at or above the 75th percentile on all other normed referenced assessments.
