Update from Superintendent Steward - June 30, 2020

June 30, 2020

Dear Families:

I hope your first week of summer has been enjoyable, and that you and your child are continuing to find ways to engage in learning. With planning still underway for the 2020-21 school year, I wanted to share updates from our District Reopening Committee and additional information regarding the fall.

The final draft of the 2020-21 school calendar has been shared on our district website (FlintSchools.org). Barring any changes, the first day of school will be Wednesday, August 5. We encourage you to mark your calendars and share this information with your fellow parents, if you haven’t already.

The District Reopening Committee also continues to prepare for a safe reopening of schools—whether in-person or virtually—as we review the guidance from the Governor’s office and Michigan Department of Education, which we received today. I am grateful for the work of so many—including paraprofessionals, administrators, Board of Education members, teachers and parents—in developing this plan.

I also wanted to extend my gratitude to parents and guardians who dedicated time to participate in the District Reopening Committee’s Parent Survey. We received nearly 700 responses and are reviewing every single one. Among the feedback, we have learned:
• Families are split among wanting to attend school online, in-person or through blended learning next year, with in-person leading by 38.6% and blended learning by 26.6%
• If we return to school in-person, parents desire strong social distancing, cleaning and disinfecting
• The majority of parents agree if remote learning is continued, learning packets should be available by both print and online
• Parents are proud of the district’s efforts to increase communication through wellness calls and technology support

You may have also seen a separate student survey on social media—we have extended the deadline to Monday, July 6, and participating students will now be entered to win one of six $25 gift cards simply by completing the survey. Students who have already completed the survey will be eligible to win as well. We value students’ voices and opinion as to what their education should look like. We are in the process of reviewing their feedback, which will also help determine a plan for the fall.

Our primary focus remains your child’s safety while providing high-quality education and support services to families we are honored to serve. We are committed to keeping you updated as we progress and will notify you as soon as the full plan for the fall is available.

Your partner in education,

Mrs. Anita J. Steward
