Flint, Michigan – June 5, 2026 — Flint Community Schools Board of Education is proud to invite scholars, families, staff, alumni, community members, and local partners to celebrate a historic milestone as the district breaks ground on Flint’s new state-of-the-art high school.
The groundbreaking ceremony will take place on Wednesday, June 17, at 4:00 p.m. at the former Flint Central High School site.
This event marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Flint Community Schools and the Flint community. The new high school will serve as a modern learning environment designed to prepare future generations of scholars for success while honoring the rich legacy of education in Flint.
Community members will have the opportunity to join district leaders, elected officials, project partners, scholars, staff, and supporters as they celebrate the start of construction on a facility that will help shape the future of education in the city.
“This groundbreaking represents more than the start of a construction project, it symbolizes hope, opportunity, and our continued investment in Flint’s students,” said Superintendent Kevelin Jones. “We are excited to celebrate this important moment with our community and look forward to building a high school that our scholars, families, and community can be proud of for generations to come.”
“This groundbreaking marks a powerful example of what strong leadership and meaningful partnerships can accomplish,” said Dr. Joyce Ellis-McNeal, President of the Flint Community Schools Board of Education. “It represents one of the final milestones in the R4 vision and goals, demonstrating our commitment to reinvesting in our children, our educators, and the future of Flint Community Schools and the City of Flint. Through collaboration and shared purpose, we are creating opportunities that will positively impact generations to come.”
A Flint Southwestern Classical Academy Student Council member and Flint Jaguars athlete said the new high school is already generating excitement among current students.
“I think the plans for the building are great, and it will attract other Flint kids to want to come to the new school,” the student said. “Probably because I’m an athlete, I’m excited to see what we are doing for athletics. I like that we will have a new turf field and all that because we don’t currently have one now.”
