The celebration also included a special treat for our younger scholars! Brownell STEM Academy scholars joined in the fun for some trick-or-treating, sharing smiles, sweet treats, and Halloween cheer with their Holmes friends. 📚🍬

Health services Newsletter October 2026 Dear Parents and Guardians, Cold and flu season has officially started in Michigan which means an increasing rise in respiratory viruses including the common cold, COVID-19, RSV, and influenza (Flu). Because these illnesses can spread rapidly in our classrooms, we want to share a few important reminders about illness prevention to keep our school community and students healthy, safe, and learning in the classroom. Children who go to school while sick may put others at risk of becoming ill themselves, which is why children need to stay at home when they begin to show signs of illness and be seen by a healthcare provider if symptoms continue or worsen. When to Keep your Child at Home Please monitor your child daily for symptoms such as a fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, and fatigue. To help prevent widespread virus transmission, please keep your child home if they have: • Fever: A temperature of 100.4 F or higher. Students must stay home until they are fever free for 24hours without the help of fever-reducing medication. • Vomiting or Diarrhea: Your child should remain home if they have experienced these gastrointestinal symptoms within the past 24 to 72 hours and must stay home until they are symptom free for 24 hours without medication. • Severe Symptoms: A persistent, congested (wet) or croupy(barking) cough, wheezing, or a sore throat that limits their ability to focus or participate. **If your child wakes up with vague complaints of feeling unwell, Michigan health guidelines recommend observing them at home for 1-2 hours before deciding whether to send them to school. Healthy Habits to Practice We are actively reinforcing healthy habits at school and appreciate your help doing the same at home: • Handwashing: Remind children to wash their hands frequently with soap and water. • Respiratory Etiquette: Teach children to cough or sneeze into a tissue or the inside of their elbow or upper sleeve- not into their hands. • Avoid sharing: Encourage your child not to share food, drinks, or eating utensils with classmates. • Vaccination Protection: State medical officials strongly recommend that families stay up to date on their annual flu and respiratory vaccines. If your child is diagnosed with the flu or another contagious respiratory virus, please notify the school office as soon as possible so we can monitor illness trends in our classrooms.
