Yesterday marked a major milestone for the future of our scholars!

Crews officially began demolition on the Napoleon J. LaVoie Field House, taking the first tactical step to clear the way for our brand-new, state-of-the-art high school campus. Members of Napoleon J. LaVoie's family were present to witness this bittersweet milestone, honoring his incredible legacy as we transition the site.

Over the next several months, crews will continue working sequentially to safely remove the remaining vacant buildings on site. We are so proud to take these historic steps forward for our scholars, families, and the entire Flint community as we build toward our opening for the 2028-29 school year.

Education has always been at the heart of a strong democracy. For the past 150 years, the teachers, principals, support staff, administrators, and countless educators of Flint Community Schools have helped build not only our community, but our country. Their dedication has shaped leaders, innovators, public servants, entrepreneurs, and families who continue to strengthen America.

Our story began in 1875, when Flint's first high school classes were held in City Hall. Today, we are writing the next chapter of that history. The first purpose-built Flint High School is now being transformed into a state-of-the-art high school that will once again serve the students and families of Flint. This investment honors our rich legacy while creating new opportunities for future generations.

I want to recognize and thank the Flint Board of Education for its vision, leadership, and unwavering commitment to making this historic transformation a reality. Together, we are preserving our history while investing boldly in the future of public education.

As we celebrate 250 years of our nation and 150 years of Flint Community Schools, let us remember that the strength of our country has always depended on the power of education and the people who dedicate their lives to serving our children.
