Flint, Michigan – September 4, 2025 – As the 2025–26 school year begins, Genesee County superintendents are raising concerns about Michigan’s delayed state budget and its potential impact on students.

By law, the state’s K–12 budget should have been finalized by July 1, but lawmakers have yet to reach an agreement. Without action, a government shutdown on September 30 could delay critical school funding. Superintendents warn that missing the October 20 state aid payment would jeopardize teacher and staff salaries, transportation, classroom supplies, and academic programs.

At the center of the dispute is a proposal to use money from the School Aid Fund—originally established for K–12 education—for other priorities such as road repairs. According to recent polling, 85.7% of Michigan voters oppose redirecting these funds.

Superintendents from all 21 public school districts in Genesee County, along with the Genesee Intermediate School District, are urging lawmakers to protect school funding and pass a budget immediately. They are also calling on families and community members to contact state legislators to advocate for education.
